Analysis of daily body weight of dairy cows in early lactation and associations withproductive and reproductive performance R. Bras. Zootec.
Poncheki,Jessica Karina; Canha,Maria Luíza Schultz; Viechnieski,Sandro Luiz; Almeida,Rodrigo de.
The objective of this study was to describe daily body weight (BW) changes in the first 100 days of lactation in confined dairy cows and to associate BW loss with productive and reproductive performance. Data included 26,344 daily BW measurements of 372 Holsteins calving between June 2011 and June 2012 in a commercial herd in the South of Brazil. Cows were automatically weighed and were assigned according to parity. Individual measurements were smoothed using cubic splines, generating nadir BW, days to nadir BW and the BW loss (absolute and relative values). This approach used days in milk (DIM) as a single smoothing variable. Body weight at calving differed across parities: 570.5, 653.5, and 699.9 kg, for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd and subsequent parities,...

Ant colony algorithm for analysis of gene interaction in high-dimensional association data R. Bras. Zootec.
Rekaya,Romdhane; Robbins,Kelly.
In recent years there has been much focus on the use of single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) fine genome mapping to identify causative mutations for traits of interest; however, many studies focus only on the marginal effects of markers, ignoring potential gene interactions. Simulation studies have show that this approach may not be powerful enough to detect important loci when gene interactions are present. While several studies have examined potential gene interaction, they tend to focus on a small number of SNP markers. Given the prohibitive computation cost of modeling interactions in studies involving a large number SNP, methods need to be develop that can account for potential gene interactions in a computationally efficient manner. This study adopts...

Anticorpo monoclonal contra uma proteína macho-específica de 19 kDa em espermatozóides bovinos: uma metodologia promissora para imunosexagem R. Bras. Zootec.
Souza,Clóvis José Pascarelli; Matta,Marcos Fernandes Resende da; Cruz,Gilson Mendes; Alves,Elias Walter; Kanashiro,Milton Massaricho; Silva,José Frederico Straggiotti.

Antioxidant supplementation to the exercising horse R. Bras. Zootec.
Williams,Carey A..
Evidence of oxidative stress in horses has been described in reports dealing with intense and endurance exercise. Oxidative stress occurs when antioxidant systems are insufficient causing oxidation to potentially damage DNA, proteins, and lipids, and contribute to degenerative changes. Vitamin E is the most commonly supplemented antioxidant in horses and has been shown that horses in exercise conditioning may require higher intakes of vitamin E than recommended. Also in various species vitamin C potentiates the effects of vitamin E; however, under maintenance conditions horses have the ability to synthesize sufficient ascorbate, the demand increases as stress on the body is increased. Competitive endurance horses were estimated to consume 1.2 to 5-times...

Antioxidants and dairy production: the example of flax R. Bras. Zootec.
Petit,Hélène V..
This manuscript reports on the main problems decreasing productivity of dairy cows (e.g. fatty liver syndrome and poor fertility) and how antioxidants could enhance it. High producing dairy cows are prone to oxidative stress, and the situation can be exacerbated under certain environmental, physiological, and dietary conditions. Antioxidants have important effects on the expression of genes involved in the antioxidant status, which may enhance animal health and reproduction. Moreover, antioxidants may contribute to decrease the incidence of spontaneous oxidized flavour in milk enriched in polyunsaturated fatty acids. Plant lignans are strong antioxidants and flax is the richest source of plant lignans. Flax lignans are converted in the mammalian lignans...

Anual variation of morphologic traits and hair coat surface temperature of Holstein cows in semi-arid environment R. Bras. Zootec.
Façanha,Débora Andréa Evangelista; Silva,Roberto Gomes da; Maia,Alex Sandro Campos; Guilhermino,Magda Maria; Vasconcelos,Angela Maria de.
This work aimed to study the annual variation of temperature of the coat surface and other traits of coat in Holstein cows managed in a tropical environment by separately considering black coat and white coat. It was measured the coat thickness (mm) characteristic, hair length (mm), hair number (hair/cm²) and coat surface temperature on 191 crossbred cows with 7/8 and 31/32 Holstein composition distributed in 3 herds in a semi-arid environment. Less dense coats with shorter, flattened hair occurred predominantly in March, a time coinciding to high levels of solar radiation. This type of coat shows low resistance to the flux of latent and sensitive heat through the skin, thus favoring heat loss. The black coat surface temperature was on average 4ºC higher...
